Who is English Racing
Have been meaning to do this for years so people understand the Team.
English Racing is a special place in the Mitsubishi world. To find a
shop that is truly an expert in building motors to take 1000+ hp,
building transmissions, tuning, fab work, and getting this all under one
roof is rare. The Team started back in 2004 and has learned and
compiled knowledge until now with no loss in team members. How many
shops have 3 tuners, 3 Engine builders all under one roof that can all
agree on doing things the same way. If there is debate in the shop,
calculators, tape measures, engine simulators, or whatever else is
needed to prove the point comes out and gets put to use. All our
knowledge is based off experience and proven actions, not theories and
opinions.
While I can probably write a book on each member I will try to cut to the chase.
Who Works for ER
1.
Lucas English- Owner/president Lucas started as the main Auto Tech,
Tuner and Transmission Builder. As of now 2011 Lucas is the main AEM,
ECM link/DSM Tuner and Shop coordinator. Wishes he could just work on
cars again.
2.
TJ Lewton- Head Transmission & Motor Builder, Honda Tuner, and
Fabricator. He has been with English Racing since 2005. The man who can
take an idea and make it happen.
3 Jake Kanooth- The man with the most Automotive experience in our team on a variety of cars.
Working
in a full time general automotive shop for 10years before starting at
ER. He does motor, transmission and fab work and is the best at getting
the job done.
4
Aaron ONeal- Head Evolution\Subaru flash tuner and Shop Manager. Aaron
brings in a lifetime of automotive knowledge. Working in the Automotive
industry since 1999, he started tuning Evos in 2006. Aaron’s ability
to run the numbers for different motor combos, cam choices, etc. is
amazing.
5
Jeff Bush- Good customer turned employee. He is our Head Porter, builds
motors, fabricates and wrenches and loves the sport. Jeff is now full
time and has been with us part time and help around the shop since 2009.
In the last year Jeff’s skills as a Auto tech have improved amazingly
coming from being a home builder where cars were only hobby.
6 Myles Kerr- Newest member head phone and parts ordering man for now. Also speaks fluent Spanish
Story of How We Started
In 2000 Lucas bought his 1st DSM 1992 Eagle Talon TSI. 1st time out at
the track ever with his B16g he was running high 13s. The nightmare
addiction started form there. Spending those first few years going
forward and backwards with the car breaking and fixing. Doing what ever
it took to keep it a Drag/Street car. In 2002 with the help of a good
friend Terry Livermore Lucas learned how to fix his own transmission.
Much needed for a classic DSMer with no $$. Lucas started fixing
transmissions for friends and doing light work in the end of 2002. He
Incorporated Jan 1st, 2004. At this time he had a chance to share a shop
with friend Mark @ MPH Specialities. He worked for Mark part time and
did DSM work part time for about 8months and by that time there was just
too much DSM work to help Mark. It was a great experience for Lucas to
get the opportunity to work on many different cars other then just DSMs
to grow his automotive experience. At the end of 2004 Lucas moved back
to his house and with the help of a friend Joey Agee they started doing
just DSMs full time. In the start of 2005 Lucas rented a small portion
of a shop from his friend Kurt Hill to store parts and rebuild
transmissions, later adding a 53 foot container to store parts in. (a
lot of people remember the container) TJ also started working for Lucas
in Early 2005. After about 1 & ½ years working from the house and
container the neighbors on Addy Street were not too happy. Lucas had the
chance to buy the shop from his Dad Gene English in Camas. (This is the
current shop) Being that this was originally a wood working shop there
were no bay doors. So it was a good 6 month cleanup to even get the 1st
car in and start working. While the shop is still not looking good
yet, at this time it was real bad with lots of mud & a bad parking
lot. In the start of 2007 is when Jake Kanooth left his dad’s
Automotive shop to work for Lucas. In Early 2008 Aaron Oneal started
with the Team bringing his Flash tuning experience to the table and
help take the phone tuning load off of Lucas which was getting pretty
overwhelming at that time. In the end of 2009 Jeff Bush started helping
around the shop. So this is our Team as of 2011 and we are still
growing and learning to this day.
The
Future of the Shop and whats going on. This may help explain to some
why Lucas has not been able to focus on cars well for the last few
years. This is more of a whiny story but very sad to see how our
country does not let the small business thrive. Starting in 2007 the
profit for English Racing really started taking off but it was all sank
back into the shop. While the shop is still mathing out it’s not the
deal it once was in trying to get it approved for automotive.
In
2006 when Lucas started buying the shop he knew he would have to get it
approved for Automotive use which was legal under a conditional use
permit in that zoning. In 2006-2007 ER spent around 15K with a company
JD White to help get the approval but after wasted $$ and almost seeming
worse results. ER just kept working. In the end of 2008 someone turned
ER into code enforcement. At this point ER had to move forward in the
approval process to keep code enforcement happy. ER found much better
help with Minster Glasier and PLS Engineering in getting the right steps
to making the shop legal. By the End of 2009 and after paying Clark
County over 40K Lucas was legal to be automotive but was now at what
most would consider the starting point. Still needing to get building
permits to break ground. We were close to 90K all said and done to make
automotive legal at this location with paying Clark County, surveying,
site planning, engineering,etc... So what once was thought to be an
amazing deal with low overhead is not the case. While we will still be
better off than most shops it was definitely a crimp in Lucas’ original
dream. We are hoping by July 2011 the plans will be approved and we can
start the remodel of the shop to add better office space and a location
for the Dyno. By the End of 2012 we plan to have the parking lot
paved, landscaped and a finished product so we can focus on cars and the
business and not worrying about the shop. This is a pretty cut down
version of the hell Lucas has been going through with the shop.
Things
to change for the better by the middle of 2011. While our team has
amazing knowledge of Turbo Import cars and Lucas’ undying drive to make
sure everyone is happy with our work, we have been known to let people
down on the front side with answering the phones and keeping people up
to date with time lines. We have now just reached a level where we can
bring in another full time person to help with the phones and ordering
parts. So with the addition of our new employee, Myles. I hope we can
deliver the same front end service that equals the quality of work we do
on the cars we work on.
About in 2008
English Racing started in 2004 out of my garage. In early 2006 we moved to our small shop in Camas WA that was a huge work in progress but an upgrade from the garage.
Unlike most shops that seem to eager just be a name or based around 1 guy we truly are an amazing Team. I feel a performance shop like ours is nothing without the right team. Trying to find people who know the 4G63t and a true love for cars like our team is almost impossible and without them I would be nothing.
